E-Learning

E-learning is the process of using electronic media and information and communication technologies (ICT) in education. In e-learning several media are used to deliver text, audio, images or even video. E-learning can occur in or out of a classroom, it can be self-paced or instructor led. The advantage of e-learning is that it's suited for distance learning and flexible learning. Also it can be used alongside face-to-face teaching. Some of the benefits that arise from e-learning include:

  • Capacity and consistency

E-learning offers the ability to achieve high levels of coverage among your audience and ensures the message passed on is consistent thus all users get the same training.

  • Flexibility and reaching out to people in far areas.

E-learning gives students the freedom to learn when and where they are and at their own speed.

E-learning services can be described as integrated applications that provide teachers and learners with information, tools and resources to support and enhance the learning process.

E-learning services are mostly provided online and can include WebPages, emails, discussion forums and video conferencing. Various technologies are used to facilitate e-learning services. The most commonly used techniques include virtual classrooms, collaborative software and blogs.

Virtual classrooms which utilize a combination of technologies are perhaps the most widely used e-learning services. One example would be web conferencing software that enables students and instructors to communicate with each other via webcam, microphone and real time chatting in a group setting e.g. GoToTraining, WebEx, Training or Adobe Connect.

Collaborative software is application software designed to help people involved in a common task achieve a common goal and in the case of e-learning services collaborative software in intended to transform the way documents and other educational media are shared to enable effective collaboration between the teacher and the students.
